One of the main reasons why people drive along this scenic road is because of the scenery. You’ll have a view of a mountain creek along most of your drive, and you might spot people fishing as you drive by. There are tons of beautiful wooded views along the drive. You will enjoy looking out into the trees during the spring to look for wildflowers or in the fall to see a variety of colors. There’s even a waterfall you can see from your car!

2. Might See Wildlife

Many people talk about seeing wildlife when they drive on the Roaring Fork Motor Trail. While there’s no guarantee you’ll see black bears or white tailed deer as you drive, these animals are known for frequenting the area. You’ll probably see birds, squirrels, and bugs along the drive. If you do happen to see a black bear or two, do not get any closer than 50 yards. Stay a safe distance away and do not feed any wild animals.

3. Tons of History

Right before you enter the Roaring Fork Motor Trail road, you can visit the Noah “Bud” Ogle cabin. You’ll have to take a short hike to the cabin, but it’s definitely worth it. This cabin was built in the 1880s, and it is known as a saddle bag house, which means two buildings are connected by sharing a chimney. A little farther up the road, you’ll find the Ogle tub mill, which was used to grind corn into meal, and it is right next to the river. If you enjoy seeing parts of history, then you’ll definitely want to drive this road.

4. Hiking Trails Along the Drive

If you enjoy driving then getting out and exercising, you should drive this road. There are several hiking trails along the road. You can take a short walk to the Ogle cabin. The trailhead to Rainbow Falls is along this road. This is a 5-mile roundtrip, moderate hiking trail with a beautiful 80-foot waterfall at the end. Another popular hiking trail along the Roaring Fork Motor Trail is Grotto Falls. It’s a popular waterfall in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park because the roundtrip length is 3 miles roundtrip. The trail is considered moderate, and you’ll cross creeks along the trail. Once you reach Grotto Falls, you’ll see water pouring over the side into a small pool. Grotto Falls is the only waterfall you can walk behind in the national park. Hiking these trails along the Roaring Fork Motor Trail.
